Life#
Riza Efendi was born in Trabzon in 1869/70 (AH 1286), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Veliko Tarnovo (Tırnova) in 1885/86, at about 16, paid from the start, on 142 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Riza in Malko Tarnovo (Tırnovacık) as Muvassil, where the entries run to 1887/88. Riza then moved to six places in 17 years, from Lüleburgaz to Jizan (Cizan), with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in 1899/1900 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1901/02. The last post was in Gharyan (Garyan) in 1906/07. The posts lie on three continents, Africa, Asia and Europe, as for fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Yemen, about 2,900 km from Trabzon, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
Pay rose from 142 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 1,200 in 1901/02, as 2. Müdür in Jizan, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 21 years of salary come to 127,452 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
