Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1869/70 (AH 1286), Ahmet Raşit Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (ketebe). Ahmet Raşit had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Ezine in 1880/81, at about 12, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Ahmet Raşit as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Aydın, where the entries run to 1888/89. Next came Çanakkale from 1889 to 1896, then Bayburt, Sivas and Malkoclar from 1896 to 1899, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1898/99. In 1899/1900 the lists place Ahmet Raşit in Gümüşhane.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 500 in 1898/99, as 3. Müdür in Malkoclar, when 48 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 15 years pay ended where it began, at 400 kuruş; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The last annual entry is for 1899/1900.
