Life#
Zeynelabidin Efendi was born in Ürgüp in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Berber". Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Zeynelabidin also wrote Turkish and spoke Albanian and Bulgarian, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration). Few officials knew Albanian; only 18 of the 5,211 officials did.
Zeynelabidin began work in the Cinayet Kalemi in Niš (Niş) in 1874/75, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1876/77, with Zeynelabidin as a registry clerk (Mukayyit) in Niš. Next came Kumanovo (Kumanova) from 1878 to 1887, with a rise to tithe official (Aşar Memuru), then Kriva Palanka in 1888/89. The annual lists then follow Zeynelabidin back to Kumanovo from 1889 to 1894. The last post was in Pristina (Priştine) in 1895/96.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1876/77 to 280 in 1878, the peak, as Aşar Memuru in Kumanovo, when 7 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 250 kuruş. In all, 17 years of salary come to 44,280 kuruş, 42 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
