Life#
Mehmet Reşit Efendi was born in Kavala in 1843/44 (AH 1259) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a farmer (çiftçi). At about 24, in 1867/68, Mehmet Reşit began work in Prizren, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1869/70, places Mehmet Reşit in Skopje (Üsküp) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1874/75. Mehmet Reşit then moved to Mitrovica (Mitroviça) from 1875 to 1877, then Kumanovo (Kumanova) from 1877 to 1887. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Reşit to Brana and Grevena (Grebene) from 1887 to 1890, then Mustafakemalpaşa (Kirmasti) from 1890 to 1895. Next came four places in nine years, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1903/04. The last posts were in Konya from 1905 to 1907, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). In all, 11 places on two continents, a number reached by fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 39 years or more.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to a peak of 1,200 in 1905/06, as 1. Müdür in Konya, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
