Life#
Born in Plovdiv (Filibe) in 1865/66 (AH 1282), Hüseyin Sıtkı Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Hüseyin Sıtkı began work in Xanthi (İskeçe) in 1880/81, at about 16, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, places Hüseyin Sıtkı in Kumanovo (Kumanova) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Hüseyin Sıtkı then moved to Dersim, Bursa and Bilecik from 1887 to 1892, then back to Bursa from 1892 to 1899. The annual lists then follow Hüseyin Sıtkı to Zagor in 1899/1900, and Sivrihisar in 1900/01, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür). The last posts were in Tetovo (Kalkandelen) from 1901 to 1905.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 750 in 1901/02, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Tetovo, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05; the list of 1905/06 (AH 1323) gives the status word Vefat (death).
