Life#
Osman Faiz Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1865/66 (AH 1282), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1881/82, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1885/86 to 1906/07 places Osman Faiz in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1886/87 as an official (Memur), from 1887/88 in the statistics office (İstatistik Kalemi) and from 1894/95 in the Musevvit Kalemi.
Pay rose from 220 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to a peak of 650 in 1905/06, in the Musevvit Kalemi in Istanbul, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 124,740 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
