Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1864/65 (AH 1281) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mehmet Hasim Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mehmet Hasim also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic.
At about 18, in 1882/83, Mehmet Hasim began work in the Mahkeme Kalemi in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1885/86, with Mehmet Hasim as a sergeant (Çavuş) in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1889/90. Mehmet Hasim then moved to Bitlis, Muş and Aleppo (Halep) from 1890 to 1893, with a rise to police commissioner, third class (3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri) in 1890/91. The last posts were in İskenderun from 1893 to 1895.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1885/86 to 400 in 1890/91, the peak, as 3. Sınıf Polis Komiseri in Bitlis, when 28 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1894/95; the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
