Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Hüseyin Efendi was the child of a sergeant (çavuş). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Bayburt in 1878/79, at about 18, paid from the start, on 150 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1878/79, places Hüseyin in Bayburt as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1882/83. For 1883 to 1892 the lists have no entry. Hüseyin then moved to Muş from 1892 to 1894, then Aşkale from 1894 to 1904. The last post was in Diyadin in 1904/05.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to 420 in 1902/03, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Aşkale, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 18 years of salary come to 69,240 kuruş, 63 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1904/05. An entry in "Erzurum vilayeti doğumlu Osmanlı uleması Bab-ı Meşihat Arşivi ulema sicil ..." by SİNAN ÇAKMAK (2023) probably refers to Hüseyin, since the name and the birthplace agree.
