Life#
Born in Erzurum in 1858/59 (AH 1275), Ahmet Hamdi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Ahmet Hamdi began work in Muş in 1876/77, at about 17, with seven unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. Of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship, fewer than 6 per cent worked unpaid for seven years or longer. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Ahmet Hamdi in Bitlis as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1890/91. The last posts were in Diyadin and Bulanık from 1891 to 1896 and Erzincan in 1896/97, with a rise to director of the third grade (3. Müdür) in 1892/93.
Pay rose from 285 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 500 in 1892/93, as 3. Müdür in Bulanık, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
