Life#
Born in İnebolu in 1858/59 (AH 1275) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Raşit Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 24, in 1882/83, Raşit began work in İnebolu, paid from the start, on 140 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1882/83, places Raşit in İnebolu, the birthplace, as Musillik. Raşit then moved to Mabeyni humayun from 1884 to 1890. From 1890 to 1906 the annual entries place Raşit in Istanbul.
The salary went from 140 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to 800 in 1905/06, the peak, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Istanbul, when 78 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 23 years of salary come to 157,860 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
