Life#
Ahmet Rıfat Efendi was born in Serres (Siroz) in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a medrese teacher (müderris). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1877/78, Ahmet Rıfat began work in Thessaloniki (Selanik), with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1878/79, to 1890/91, every annual entry places Ahmet Rıfat in the same office, clerkship of the chief director's office (Başmüdür Kitabeti), in Thessaloniki.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1878/79 to a peak of 600 in 1888/89, in the Başmüdür Kitabeti in Thessaloniki, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1890/91.
