Born in Gelibolu in 1860/61 (AH 1277) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ahmet Sadettin Efendi was the child of a sheikh (şeyh). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).

Ahmet Sadettin began work in the telegraph service (Telgraf) in Gelibolu in 1877/78, at about 16, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 180 kuruş.
