Life#
Mustafa Hulusi Efendi was born in Kemah in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Edirne in 1870/71, at about 19, with five unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 285 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mustafa Hulusi as an official (Memur) in Sofia (Sofya), with a rise to postal official (Posta Memuru) in 1876/77. For 1877 to 1880 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Hulusi to Muş, Bayburt and Erzincan from 1880 to 1883, then back to Kemah, the birthplace, from 1883 to 1903, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Galata from 1903 to 1905 and Azapkapı from 1905 to 1907.
The salary went from 285 kuruş a month in 1875/76 to 700 in 1895/96, the peak, as Muhabere Memuru in Kemah, when three in four paid officials earned less.
