Life#
Abdullah Efendi was born in Beirut (Beyrut) in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Maronite Christian (Maruni) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Abdullah also wrote Arabic, French and Italian.
Abdullah began work in Acre (Akka) in 1869/70, at about 18, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 450 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Abdullah in Gaza (Gazze) as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), where the entries run to 1895/96, with a rise to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1881/82. Next came Antalya from 1897 to 1906. The last post was in Bitola (Manastır) in 1906/07.
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 850 in 1892/93, as 2. Müdür in Gaza, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 296,880 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
