Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Ohannes Gazazyan Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Tera Santa. Ohannes Gazazyan knew four languages, French and Italian in writing, Turkish in speech and Arabic a little, a number reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials. Of the 5,146 officials with a school, no other studied at Tera Santa.
Work began in Diyarbakır in 1868/69, at about 22, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1872/73, places Ohannes Gazazyan in Babaeski (Baba-yı Atik) as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Thessaloniki in 1874/75, then Kuşadası from 1875 to 1880. Ohannes Gazazyan then moved to Samos in 1880/81, as a director of the second grade (2. Müdür), then back to Kuşadası from 1881 to 1893. The annual lists then follow Ohannes Gazazyan to Melnik in 1893/94. From 1895 to 1906 every annual entry places Ohannes Gazazyan again in Samos.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to 1,120 in 1898/99, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Samos, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
