Life#
Mehmet Faik Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1847/48 (AH 1264) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in Diyarbakır in 1862/63, at about 15, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 600 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Mehmet Faik as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Cizre. Mehmet Faik then moved to Kirkuk in 1872/73, then back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1873 to 1878. Next came Mardin from 1878 to 1887, then Diyarbakır and Mardin from 1887 to 1892. The last posts were in Diyarbakır again from 1892 to 1895. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, fewer than 10 per cent kept one title throughout.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 600 kuruş a month in 1868/69, as Muhabere Memuru in Cizre, when 47 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 600; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. After the last annual entry, for 1894/95, the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death). Mehmet Faik probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahval defterlerinde Diyarbekirli yöneticiler" by İSHAK ŞİMŞEK (2013) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
