Life#
Yusuf Kemal Efendi was born in Ürgüp in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Yusuf Kemal also attended the telegraph school.
Yusuf Kemal began work in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 23, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places Yusuf Kemal in Istanbul as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1878/79. Yusuf Kemal then moved to Kuşadası from 1880 to 1900, with a rise to communications official (Muhabere Memuru). The last posts were in Zor in 1900/01 and Yabannasif in 1901/02.
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 1,000 in 1901/02, as 2. Müdür in Yabannasif, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less.
