Life#
This official was born in Istanbul in 1851/52 (AH 1268) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); the official also wrote Armenian and French and spoke Turkish.
The official began work in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 22, paid from the start, on 500 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with the official as a factory official (Fabrika Memuru) in Istanbul, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1878, with a rise to machine official (Makine Memuru) in 1878. From 1878 to 1895 the annual entries place the official in Izmir (İzmir).
