Life#
Marat Beyefendi was born in Istanbul in 1850/51 (AH 1267) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Marat also wrote Armenian, French and Turkish.
Marat began work in Istanbul in 1869/70, at about 18, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 230 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1871/72, to 1905/06, every annual entry places Marat in the same office, Ecnebiye Kalemi, in Istanbul, the birthplace. Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, 13 kept one title in one place throughout.
