Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1852/53 (AH 1269), Hasan Azmi Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "iltizam Pul Memuru". Hasan Azmi had nine years of schooling, at the Mahrec-i Aklam, and wrote Turkish and had some knowledge of French. Few officials studied at Mahrec-i Aklam; no other of the 5,146 officials with a school did.
At about 19, in 1872/73, Hasan Azmi began work in the Divani Humayun Kalemi in Istanbul, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 150 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1874/75 to 1881/82 places Hasan Azmi in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi), from 1876/77 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi) and from 1881/82 in the Tekaut Kitabeti.
Pay rose from 150 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 250 in 1876/77, in the Kontrol Kalemi in Istanbul, when 8 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, nine years of salary come to 22,800 kuruş, 38 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1881/82.
