Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1860/61 (AH 1277), Mehmet Raşit Efendi 1277 came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a telegraph official (telgraf memuru). Mehmet Raşit had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 14, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1874/75 to 1905/06 places Mehmet Raşit in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1879/80 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi), from 1882/83 as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) and from 1890/91 in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi). A career like this is rare; 11 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 725 in 1900/01, the peak, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when four in five paid officials earned less.
