Life#
Born in Kazanlak (Kızanlık) in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Nuri Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). Nuri had 14 years of schooling, at the School of Civil Administration (Mülkiye Mektebi), and wrote French as well as Turkish.
Work began in Çankırı in 1884/85, at about 22, with six unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1890/91, places Nuri in Heybeliada as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). Next came Haydarpaşa from 1891 to 1894. From 1894 to 1906 the annual entries place Nuri in Beyoğlu, first as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti), from 1896/97 in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1890/91 to a peak of 710 in 1905/06, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Beyoğlu, when three in four paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
