Life#
Born in Istiranca in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community, Yosef Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Yosef had 14 years of schooling, at the School of Civil Administration (Mülkiye Mektebi), wrote French, Greek (Rum) and Turkish, and held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
At about 27, in 1893/94, Yosef began work in Istanbul, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Yosef as a postal official (Posta Memuru) in Sirkeci. Next came Svilengrad (Cisr-i Mustafapaşa) from 1894 to 1903, with a rise to travelling postal official (Seyyar Memur). The last posts were in Istanbul from 1903 to 1905.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to 750 in 1894/95, the peak, as Seyyar Memur in Svilengrad, when 76 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1904/05.
Places in order of time#
Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
