Life#
Hasan Behçet Efendi was born in Haskovo (Hasköy) in 1866/67 (AH 1283), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Hasan Behçet also wrote Bulgarian, French and Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1893/94, at about 27, with half a year without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Hasan Behçet as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Mersin. Hasan Behçet then moved to Birgos in 1894/95, as a director of the third grade (3. Müdür), and Gemlik in 1895/96. From 1896 to 1907 the annual entries place Hasan Behçet in Istanbul.
Pay rose from 500 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 600 in 1894/95, as 3. Müdür in Birgos, when 60 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
