Life#
Vensan Diraso Efendi was born in Ankara in 1845 (AH 1261), into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. In all Vensan Diraso knew five languages, Armenian, English, French and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
Vensan Diraso began work in Istanbul in 1864/65, at about 19, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 576 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Vensan Diraso as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru) in Vlorë (Avlonya). Next came Shkodër (İşkodra) and Diyarbakır from 1867 to 1871, then a return to Ankara, the birthplace, from 1871 to 1883. Vensan Diraso then moved to Bursa, Rhodes (Rodos), İskenderun, Thessaloniki (Selanik) and Bitola (Manastır), five places in 11 years. The last posts were in Beyoğlu from 1894 to 1896. Ten provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by only 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 576 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,200 in 1888/89, as 1. Müdür in İskenderun, when 87 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 1,000 kuruş. After 31 years the salary stood below the first, 550 kuruş against 576. The last annual entry is for 1895/96.
