Life#
Born in Nevşehir in 1854/55 (AH 1271), Mustafa Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mustafa also attended the telegraph school, and wrote Arabic, Persian and Turkish.
Mustafa began work in Istanbul in 1874/75, at about 19, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1875/76, places Mustafa in Ankara as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), where the entries run to 1878. The last posts were in Boğazlıyan from 1878 to 1882 and Ürgüp in 1882/83.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1875/76, as Muhabere Memuru in Ankara, when 23 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over nine years the salaries add up to 42,480 kuruş, 72 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1882/83.
