Life#
Born in Yozgat in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Mahmut Nuri Efendi was the child of a soldier (asker). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 31, in 1872/73, Mahmut Nuri began work, paid from the start, on 80 kuruş a month. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 3 per cent started at 31 or older. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Mahmut Nuri as an official (Memur) in Yozgat, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1874/75. Next came Ankara in 1875/76, as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), then a return to Yozgat from 1876 to 1880. The annual lists then follow Mahmut Nuri to Ürgüp in 1881/82 and Beyobasi in 1882/83. From 1883 to 1897 the annual entries place Mahmut Nuri in Boğazlıyan.
Pay rose from 80 kuruş a month in 1872/73 to a peak of 500 in 1875/76, as Muhabere Memuru in Ankara, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 400 kuruş. In all, 25 years of salary come to 106,800 kuruş, 68 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1896/97, the list of 1897/98 (AH 1315) gives the status word Vefat (death).
