Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1845 (AH 1261), Süleyman Ramiz Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Mabeyni Humayun Hademesi". Süleyman Ramiz had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi), and attended the telegraph school as well.
At about 15, in 1859/60, Süleyman Ramiz began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Süleyman Ramiz as Enderunu Humayun in Istanbul, the birthplace. Süleyman Ramiz then moved to Silistra (Silistre), Gelibolu, Durrës (Dıraç), Bar and Üsküdar, five places in nine years, with a rise to chief communications official (Başmuhabere Memuru) in 1870/71 and to director of the second grade (2. Müdür) in 1872/73, then Kadıköy from 1876 to 1884. From 1884 to 1899 every annual entry places Süleyman Ramiz in Hadımköy.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 950 in 1872/73, the peak, as 2. Müdür in Bar, when 77 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 35 years of salary come to 219,240 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. After the last annual entry, for 1898/99, the list of 1899/1900 (AH 1317) gives the status word Vefat (death).
