Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1862/63 (AH 1279), Mehmet Asım Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Mehmet Asım had four years of schooling, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
At about 19, in 1881/82, Mehmet Asım began work in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. From 1884/85 to 1905/06 every annual entry places Mehmet Asım in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as an official (Memur), from 1892/93 in the office of the corresponding secretary (Mektubi Kalemi).
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1884/85 to 550 in 1905/06, the peak, in the Mektubi Kalemi in Istanbul, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
