Life#
Osman Efendi was born in Cerkezistan in 1853/54 (AH 1270) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Osman also attended the telegraph school.
At about 19, in 1873/74, Osman began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1874/75 to 1892/93 places Osman in Istanbul, first as an official (Memur), from 1876/77 in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi), from 1890/91 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi) and from 1892/93 in the Evrak Kalemi.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to 650 in 1892/93, the peak, in the Evrak Kalemi in Istanbul, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less.
