Life#
Hafız Halil Efendi was born in Bergama in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Schooling took 14 years, at the School of Medicine (Tıbbiye Mektebi); Halil also held a qualification (a diploma, certificate, training or decoration).
Work began in Istanbul in 1873/74, at about 33, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 33 or older. Every annual entry from 1874/75 to 1891/92 places Halil in Istanbul, first in the sorting room (Tefrik Odası), from 1878 in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi) and from 1889/90 as Tefrik Basmemuru.
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 1,200 in 1889/90, as Tefrik Basmemuru in Istanbul, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1891/92; the list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death).
