Life#
Mustafa İsmet Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1832/33 (AH 1248), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Kadi". Schooling took seven years, at the Edebiye Mektebi; Mustafa İsmet also wrote Turkish and spoke Arabic and Persian.
Mustafa İsmet began work in the Hariciye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1850/51, at about 18, with eight unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,142 officials with a known apprenticeship worked unpaid for eight years or longer. From 1874/75 to 1891/92 every annual entry places Mustafa İsmet in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the Bidayet Hukuk Muhakemesi Zabit Kitabeti, from 1875/76 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi).
Pay rose from 1,000 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 1,200 in 1882/83, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. On average the pay stood in the top 17.4 per cent of each year's paid officials; fewer than 5 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more stood as high. The last annual entry is for 1891/92; the list of 1892/93 (AH 1310) gives the status word Vefat (death).
