Life#
İsmail Ziya Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1857/58 (AH 1274), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); İsmail Ziya also attended the telegraph school.
Work began in Istanbul in 1872/73, at about 15, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 120 kuruş. From 1873/74 to 1893/94 every annual entry places İsmail Ziya in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), from 1874/75 in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1891/92 as Maas Baskitabeti and from 1892/93 as Maas Mukayyitligi.
The salary went from 120 kuruş a month in 1873/74 to 700 in 1892/93, the peak, as Maas Mukayyitligi in Istanbul, when 73 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 22 years of salary come to 100,260 kuruş, 73 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years.
