Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1856/57 (AH 1273), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at the Irfaniye Mektebi. At about 12, in 1868/69, Mehmet Nuri began work in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 100 kuruş a month. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. From 1868/69 to 1900/01 every annual entry places Mehmet Nuri in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), from 1892/93 as Senedat Memuru, from 1894/95 as an official for incoming items (Mevrude Memuru) and from 1895/96 in the control office (Kontrol Kalemi). Of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more, 11 per cent stayed in one place throughout.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to 400 in 1873/74, the peak, in the Muhasebe Kalemi in Istanbul, when one in four paid officials earned less. In all, 33 years of salary come to 101,280 kuruş, 48 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The list of 1900/01 (AH 1318) gives the status word Vefat (death).
