Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1833/34 (AH 1249) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at the Irfaniye Mektebi.
At about 16, in 1848/49, Ali Rıza began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 40 kuruş a month. Every annual entry from 1860/61 to 1883/84 places Ali Rıza in the same office, collections office (Tahsilat Kalemi), in Istanbul, the birthplace. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, 41 kept one title in one place throughout.
The salary went from 600 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to 1,250 in 1876/77, the peak, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 297,720 kuruş, 1.8 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1883/84.
