Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1832/33 (AH 1248), İbrahim Kâmil Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Maliye Ketebesi". İbrahim Kâmil began work in the Divani Humayun Kalemi in Istanbul in 1845/46, at about 14, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 50 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1860/61, with İbrahim Kâmil in the Divan-i Humayun Kalemi in Istanbul, the birthplace. Next came Basra, Al-Faw (Fav), Aleppo (Halep) and Berat (Arnavut Belgradı), four places in nine years, then Baghdad (Bağdat) from 1871 to 1877. The annual lists then follow İbrahim Kâmil to Diyarbakır in 1877/78. From 1878 to 1893 the annual entries place İbrahim Kâmil in Yemen.
Pay rose from 50 kuruş a month in 1860/61 to a peak of 4,500 in 1878, as a chief director (Başmüdür) in Yemen, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 34 years the salaries add up to 1,028,400 kuruş, 4.7 times the median official's, a level reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The peak was 90 times the first salary, a rise matched by 12 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. After the last annual entry, for 1892/93, the list of 1893/94 (AH 1311) gives the status word Vefat (death).
