Life#
Born in Trabzon in 1836/37 (AH 1252), Mehmet Sukru Efendi ibn-i Ali came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Work began in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Büyükdere in 1873/74, at about 37, on a first salary of 2,000 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 2 per cent started at 37 or older. The annual lists begin in 1878, with Mehmet Sukru ibn-i Ali as Rusumat Muduru in Bilecik. Next came Osmaneli (Lefke) and Izmir (İzmir) from 1878 to 1884, with a rise to Gumruk Muduru in 1882/83, then Yemen from 1884 to 1891, with a rise to Rusumat Nezareti. Mehmet Sukru ibn-i Ali then moved to Baghdad in 1893/94 and İskenderun in 1894/95. The last posts were in Edirne from 1895 to 1898. Yemen, about 2,900 km from Trabzon, was the post farthest from the birthplace; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home.
The salary went from 1,040 kuruş a month in 1878 to 6,000 in 1884/85, the peak, as Rusumat Nezareti in Yemen, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 942,480 kuruş, 7.7 times the median official's, a level reached by 15 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1897/98. Mehmet Sukru ibn-i Ali received a rank (rütbe).
