Life#
Aleksan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1841/42 (AH 1257) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at a community school (Millet Mektebi); Aleksan also wrote Armenian.
Aleksan began work in Istanbul in 1878, at about 37, paid from the start, on 450 kuruş a month. Fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 37 or older. The first annual entry, for 1878, places Aleksan in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a factory official (Fabrika Memuru), where the entries run to 1880/81. Next came Beyoğlu from 1881 to 1892. The last posts were in Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1892 to 1894.
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1878 to a peak of 800 in 1892/93, as a machine official (Makine Memuru) in Thessaloniki, when four in five paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
