Life#
Born in Diyarbakır in 1843/44 (AH 1259), David Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a tradesman (esnaf). David had four years of schooling, at a community school (Millet Mektebi), attended the telegraph school as well, and wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.
Work began in Istanbul in 1871/72, at about 28, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1874/75, places David in Çankırı as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru). David then moved back to Diyarbakır, the birthplace, from 1875 to 1877, then six places in 16 years, from Trabzon to Kastel. The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1880 and 1896 to 1898. The last post was in Terice in 1898/99. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 6 per cent of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, as Muhabere Memuru in Nusaybin, when 58 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 20 years of salary come to 118,380 kuruş, about what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
