Life#
Mehmet Nasir Efendi was born in Nablus in 1844/45 (AH 1260) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a religious scholar (ulema). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehmet Nasir also wrote Arabic as well as Turkish.
Work began in the Tahrirat Kalemi in Bekaa in 1859/60, at about 16, on a first salary of 150 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1874/75, with Mehmet Nasir in the custody of the cash chest (Sandık Emaneti) and no place named, with a rise to a post in the Land Registry office (Defter-i Hakani Kalemi) in 1878/79. Next came Latakia in 1888/89. The last entries, from 1889 to 1891, name Mehmet Nasir as DH Baskitabeti, with no place.
Pay rose from 450 kuruş a month in 1874/75 to a peak of 475 in 1878/79, in the Defter-i Hakani Kalemi, when one in three paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 380 kuruş. Over 18 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 450; fewer than 7 per cent of the 2,010 officials paid for 15 years or more ended as low. The list of 1906/07 (AH 1324) gives the status word Vefat (death).
