Life#
Mehmet Nuri Efendi was born in Ruse (Rusçuk) in 1832/33 (AH 1248) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a clerk (katip). Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi); Mehmet Nuri also wrote Turkish and spoke Bulgarian.
At about 25, in 1857/58, Mehmet Nuri began work in Istanbul, paid from the start, on 250 kuruş a month. The first annual entry, for 1857/58, places Mehmet Nuri in Istanbul as a machine official (Makine Memuru), where the entries run to 1868/69. The annual lists then follow Mehmet Nuri back to Ruse, the birthplace, from 1869 to 1879, then Thessaloniki (Selanik) from 1881 to 1890. The lists have no entry for 1879 to 1881. The last posts were in Kosova from 1890 to 1892. A career like this is rare; fewer than 7 per cent of the 775 officials whose entries span 30 years or more kept one title throughout.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to 650 in 1878/79, the peak, as Makine Memuru in Ruse, when 61 per cent of paid officials earned less.
