Life#
Ahmet Munir Bey was born in Istanbul in 1828/29 (AH 1244) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was an official (memur). At about 15, in 1843/44, Ahmet Munir began work in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 40 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1844/45, places Ahmet Munir in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur), where the entries run to 1870/71. The last posts were in Izmir (İzmir) from 1871 to 1878, first as Rusumat Nezareti, from 1872/73 as Rusumat Meclisi Riyaseti Baskanı, from 1876/77 as Rusumat Meclisi Riyaseti and from 1877/78 as Asar Nezareti.
Pay rose from 40 kuruş a month in 1844/45 to a peak of 11,000 in 1877/78, as Asar Nezareti in Izmir. From 1871 to 1876 and in 1877/78 no official in the lists was paid more; only 16 of the 5,203 officials with a salary were ever the best paid of a year. In all, 35 years of salary come to 1,669,800 kuruş, 8.6 times the median official's, a level reached by 11 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The peak was 275 times the first salary, a rise matched by no other of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more. The last annual entry is for 1877/78.
