Life#
Mustafa Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1829/30 (AH 1245) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Cami Hademesi". Schooling took four years, at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in the Maliye Kalemi in Istanbul in 1849/50, at about 20, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 30 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1850/51, places Mustafa in Istanbul, the birthplace, in the accounts office (Muhasebe Kalemi), where the entries run to 1874/75. From 1875 to 1885 the annual entries place Mustafa in Bursa, first as a registry clerk (Mukayyit), from 1883/84 as Dahiliye Gumrugu Baskitabeti.
Pay rose from 30 kuruş a month in 1850/51 to a peak of 1,500 in 1883/84, as Dahiliye Gumrugu Baskitabeti in Bursa, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 35 years the salaries add up to 264,516 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. Pay rose to 50 times the first salary; only 31 of the 2,859 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The final annual entry is for 1884/85.
