Life#
Born in Lehistan in 1823/24 (AH 1239), Antonoviç Efendi came from the Christian (Hristiyan) community, Polish (Leh) by nationality. Work began in Istanbul in 1855/56, at about 32, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1857/58, places Antonoviç in Istanbul as Telgraf Muhendisi, where the entries run to 1861/62. Antonoviç then moved to six places in 11 years, with a rise to Kontrol Kalemi Basmemuru in 1862/63, then Izmir (İzmir) from 1873 to 1881. The last posts were in Aleppo (Halep) from 1881 to 1885 and Shkodër (İşkodra) from 1886 to 1888. Few officials served in as many provinces; 24 of the 5,200 officials with a place of service did. The farthest post, Al-Faw, lay about 3,300 km from Lehistan, and 39 of the 5,162 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
Pay rose from 1,500 kuruş a month in 1857/58 to a peak of 3,500 in 1867/68, as an inspector (Müfettiş) in Diyarbakır, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 6.1 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by 36 of the 3,805 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.
