Life#
Yanko Makridi Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1837/38 (AH 1253), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, and the father's occupation was "Ebniye Kalfasi". Work began in Istanbul in 1857/58, at about 20, with 0.25 years without pay as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1857/58, places Yanko Makridi in Istanbul, the birthplace, as an official (Memur). Yanko Makridi then moved to Edirne in 1859/60 and Beyoğlu in 1860/61, then back to Istanbul from 1861 to 1886, with a rise to Muhasebati Ecnebiye Kalemi Muduru and to inspector (Müfettiş) in 1883/84. Next came Suriye from 1886 to 1888. The last posts were in Istanbul again from 1888 to 1897. Few careers in the lists are as long; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,211 officials have entries spanning 41 years or more.
