Life

Agop Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community. Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi); Agop also wrote Armenian as well as Turkish.

Agop began work in Diyarbakır in 1867/68, at about 27, paid from the start, on 300 kuruş a month. From the first annual entry, for 1867/68, to 1893/94, every annual entry places Agop in the same post, machine official (Makine Memuru), in Diyarbakır. Of the 1,586 officials whose entries span 20 years or more, 41 kept one title in one place throughout.

Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 400 in 1881/82, when 31 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 115,140 kuruş, 64 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
