Life#
Andon Fakaro Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the Greek Orthodox Christian (Rum) community. In all Andon Fakaro knew five languages, English, French, Greek (Rum) and Italian in writing and Turkish in speech; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,211 officials knew as many.
At about 22, in 1862/63, Andon Fakaro began work in Istanbul, with one unpaid year as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 1,056 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1863/64, with Andon Fakaro as an official for foreign communications (Muhaberat-ı Ecnebiye Memuriyeti) in Yozgat. Next came Ankara, Beyoğlu and Niš (Niş) from 1864 to 1871, then a return to Beyoğlu from 1871 to 1876. The annual lists then follow Andon Fakaro back to Istanbul, the birthplace, from 1876 to 1894. From 1894 to 1909 every annual entry places Andon Fakaro in Mabeyni humayun. Entries spanning 47 years are rare, reached by only 32 of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 1,056 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to a peak of 2,350 in 1908/09, in the foreign accounts office (Muhasebat-ı Ecnebiye Kalemi) in Mabeyni humayun, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. Andon Fakaro probably has an entry in "Sicill-i Ahvâl defterlerine göre Osmanlı bürokrasisinde İstanbul doğumlu Yahudi ve ..." by AHMET SÜRMEN (2011) (the name, the birthplace and a place of service agree).
