Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1847/48 (AH 1264), Mustafa Fahrettin Bey came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father was a brigadier general (mirliva). Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi); Mustafa Fahrettin also attended the telegraph school.
At about 16, in 1863/64, Mustafa Fahrettin began work in Istanbul, with four unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1868/69 to 1904/05 places Mustafa Fahrettin in Istanbul, the birthplace, first as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru), from 1870/71 as Babiali Telgraf Merkezi Memuriyeti. Entries spanning 38 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,211 officials.
Pay rose from 350 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 3,000 in 1897/98, as Babiali Telgraf Merkezi Memuriyeti in Istanbul, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less.
