Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1836/37 (AH 1252), Hasan Said Efendi came from the Muslim (Müslüman) community; the father's occupation was "Fabrika-i Humayunu Mudur". Hasan Said had nine years of schooling, at a preparatory secondary school (İdadi Mektebi).
Work began in Sliven (İslimiye) in 1855/56, at about 19, paid from the start, on 200 kuruş a month. The annual lists begin in 1856/57, with Hasan Said as an official (Memur) in Sliven, where the entries run to 1858/59. Hasan Said then moved to Silivri from 1860 to 1865, then Balıkesir from 1865 to 1870, with a rise to director of the first grade (1. Müdür). From 1870 to 1883 the annual entries place Hasan Said in Istanbul, the birthplace, first in the correspondence office (Tahrirat Kalemi), from 1877/78 in the documents office (Evrak Kalemi).
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1856/57 to 1,200 in 1865/66, the peak, as 1. Müdür in Balıkesir, when 71 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 27 years the salaries add up to 241,740 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1882/83; the list of 1883/84 (AH 1301) gives the status word Vefat (death).
