Life#
Born in Istanbul in 1836/37 (AH 1252), İstefan Diyon Efendi came from the Armenian Christian (Ermeni) community; the father was a money-changer (sarraf). Schooling took four years, at an Armenian community school (Ermeni Millet Mektebi).
Work began in Istanbul in 1878/79, at about 43, with two unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 200 kuruş. Of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known, 23 started at 43 or older. Every annual entry from 1880/81 to 1894/95 places İstefan Diyon in Galata, first in the dispatch office (Sevk Kalemi), from 1882/83 as a registered mail official (Taahhüt Memuru) and from 1887/88 as an official for outgoing items (Mersule Memuru).
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to a peak of 500 in 1887/88, as Mersule Memuru in Galata, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. After the last annual entry, for 1894/95, the list of 1895/96 (AH 1313) gives the status word Vefat (death).
